A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
