The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

Match Summary

  • The home side were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • The striker's fifth goal in Europe puts the team in command.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the latter period.
  • The midfielder rounds off a great display with a spot-kick.

Igor Jesus scored twice as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the European competition with a convincing triumph against their Hungarian visitors at the City Ground.

Forest had already secured a place in the knockout round play-offs and went into this game with a small chance of making the league's elite, although they needed several results to go their way.

That did not happen but this confident performance will give Forest fans belief that their side can navigate the two-legged play-off to advance to the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen did hit the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from that point forward.

Forest broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by the defender and added a second four minutes later – the striker squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th came soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the backline and then drive an effort past the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest added a fourth when the impressive James McAtee converted a penalty after a foul by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round draw takes place on the final Friday of January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest might face either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good step."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in European competition this season with six of his eleven strikes scored in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got three goals in his last two games and the prospect of competition for his position in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this match from the stands.

This development may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two superb goals and generally being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in catching the eye, with James McAtee turning in his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from the champions in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give the club some renewed optimism as they switch focus to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," continued the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just about displaying your quality.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
