Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Victories Following Player Arrests
Miami recorded eighty-six first-half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat earned a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad FBI probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Heat were focused as they put up eighty-six opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
