New England Warming Faster Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The US region known for its historical past, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid transformation. Fresh analysis shows that New England is warming faster than nearly any other place on the globe.
Unprecedented Pace of Change
The speed of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the continental United States, according to the study. The pace of its temperature rise has apparently increased notably in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's accelerating," explained a lead researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which surprised me. Our climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The research places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.
Study Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers analyzed three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"This represents very fast warming, which is concerning," commented the study author.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"
A primary reason for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then pushed inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being stored in the oceans like a massive battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has experienced severe climate events in recent years, including enormous floods and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to cherished aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by shifting seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snow.
"I live just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
